We all deserve a little pampering every now and then.

But when money is tight, professional facials and even store-bought treatments can be outside the budget.

That doesn’t mean you have to miss out!

You can make effective face masks from ingredients that you probably already have in your kitchen – just like women have been doing for thousands of years.

Many years ago now, I had a friend who had the most beautiful, flawless skin I’ve ever seen.

She was religious about her skin-care routine, but she only ever used homemade masks that she made herself from ingredients like yoghurt, ground coffee, and coconut oil.

Below are four easy DIY face mask recipes you can make from ingredients in your kitchen that will leave you with healthy, glowing skin without breaking the budget.

Natural Homemade Face Mask Recipes

There is a wide range of natural foods that are both good to eat and good for your skin. Mix and match your own combos or try one of the recipes below.

Wash off in warm water…or lick off because these are going to be good!

Citrus and Honey Face Mask For Oily Skin

lemon and honey face mask

Good for: oily skin

This citrus mask will give dull skin a healthy glow.

Citrus juice, especially lemon, tones the skin. It is both astringent and antiseptic, which is why it’s a good choice for oily skin. Honey also has natural anti-bacterial properties, particularly raw honey, but if you can’t find raw honey, regular honey is fine too.

Precautions: Lemon can make your skin sensitive to the sun, so this is a good night-time mask.

  1. Mix equal parts freshly squeezed citrus juice and honey – about 1 Tbsp of honey and lemon juice.
  2. Smooth over your face and neck and leave on for 15 minutes.
  3. Wash off with warm water.

Nourishing Facial Mask with Banana and Avocado For Dry Skin

banana and avocado face mask

Good for: dry skin

Both bananas and avocados have moisturising properties and leave your skin feeling soft and delicious.

Avocado oil is rich in fatty acids, vitamin E and other vitamins and antioxidants, which help nourish and hydrate dry skin and promote a radiant complexion while also helping to moisturise and soothe dry and irritated skin.

Bananas contain vitamins and minerals, such as vitamin C and potassium, which help hydrate and nourish the skin, leaving it soft and glowing.

  1. Mash half a banana with half an avocado.
  2. Spread over your face and neck and leave on for 15 minutes.
  3. Wash off with warm water.

Soothing Oatmeal Mask For Glowing Skin

yoghurt oat and honey face mask

Good for: all skin types

This is a good all-around skin mask, even if you have sensitive or irritated skin, that gives your skin gentle nourishment and exfoliation.

Oatmeal helps soothe skin and close pores while providing gentle exfoliation. Yoghurt has natural enzymes and lactic acids that moisturise and gently exfoliate. And honey is a skin-nourishing ingredient with antimicrobial properties and natural enzymes, making it effective for moisturizing, healing minor skin irritations, and supporting a healthy, radiant glow.

  1. Mix together 1/3 cup of oatmeal with 2 Tbsps of yoghurt, 1 tsp honey, and a little hot water or olive oil to make a paste.
  2. Spread over your skin and leave for 15 minutes.
  3. Wash off with warm water.

Pore-Tightening Face Mask

egg white, lemon, honey face mask

Good for: normal and oily skin

A pore-tightening face mask can help give you a smoother complexion.

Egg white contains proteins that can help tighten and tone the skin, reducing the appearance of pores and promoting a more youthful complexion. The lemon and honey will help lighten and soothe the skin.

Precautions: Lemon can make your skin sensitive to the sun, so this is a good night-time mask.

  1. Beat 1 egg white with 2 tsp of lemon juice and 1 tsp of honey until thick.
  2. Spread over your face and leave for 15 minutes or until dry.
  3. Rinse off with cool water.

  • Mix together mashed cucumber, yogurt and oatmeal for a refreshing mask.
  • Turmeric Mask: try mixing yoghurt and turmeric for an antioxidant mask. You can also try yoghurt and honey, yoghurt and lemon.
  • Try yogurt and honey, yogurt and lemon, yogurt and turmeric, yogurt and egg white.

  • Try witch hazel (found at the chemist) as an alcohol-free toner.
  • Try pure aloe vera juice to soothe the skin.
  • For the eyes, the old cucumber slices work wonders or keep your used tea bags for a refreshing eye pad. Try camomile tea bags for the eyes.

Creating a Relaxing At-Home Spa Experience

If a full spa experience isn’t in your budget (like me), you can create an at-home experience that is almost as good with the following tips.

  • Set aside some ‘me time’. Take the phone off the hook, inform the family, lock the bathroom door, and get dad to take the kids to the park. You deserve some pampering time – you can’t look after everything else if you’re feeling frazzled.
  • Create a personal oasis. Light some candles, burn some oils, and add some music.
  • Grab everything that you need beforehand. Bowls, oils, masks, towels, bath pillows, a robe, and a headband.
  • Cleanse your face as usual. Use your regular products to cleanse your face, but take time to do it slowly.
  • Relax in steam. Place some hot (not boiling) water in a bowl, add a couple of drops of your favourite pure essential oil and place a towel over your head to enjoy a steam bath for up to 15 minutes.
  • Apply your favourite mask and relax. Time to relax in the bath, meditate, read a book, write in your journal or listen to your favourite music. Drink your favourite cup and forget about everything else for a little while.
  • Rinse off. Rinse or wipe off your mask and finish with a toner if you like. Finish off with some cold water or non-alcoholic toner.
  • Give yourself a relaxing face massage. Grab some olive oil from the kitchen or use your regular moisturiser and spend a few moments unwinding those tight spots. I’ve tested a few face massage videos on YouTube and found this one to be the most relaxing.
